On Thursday I had five of my six classes do a challenge for their bell ringer activity. The idea was for them to go online on a chromebook and do a search for a picture, painting, poem, song lyric, etc. over our topic for that hour. Between the five classes, the learning targets for yesterday were tornadoes, genetics, and muscles (anatomy). As an alternative, I also told students that they could make their own image or write their own poem or song.
At the end of ten minutes, students were to like different submissions on our edmodo.com page. The post with the most likes was declared the winner and got a badge as being “Student of the Hour”. There were four poems written, not counting two more of my own, as well as a couple of images drawn by hand. I found the whole exercise to be a wild success. My students were writing science based poetry, drawing, and then engaging in the lesson for the remaining 30 minutes of class. It was a great end to my week.
